Who can be an event coach for SO?
Each event needs a Coach. Coaches will need level 2 clearance.
Coaches can be parents or high/middle school students.
If students, they should have experience with SO and should have participated in SO tournaments. Student Coaches need a level 2 cleared parent volunteer with them in all classes and the parent volunteer will be responsible for students.
Coach will need to conduct classes from September / beginning of the season up until regionals in Feb/March.
What does the event coach do and how much time will the event coach spend in SO?
About each event and coaching : Science Olympiad provides an event manual for each event. In the year 2024-25, the coaches conducted classes (30-60 mins) after school hours in the classrooms / library allocated by our school.
The coaches are responsible for building the learning material and finding ways to make it easier and fun for the students.
Effective ways that were used in the past are frequent quizzes, hands-on activity and experiments instead of continuous theory, video learning and application of the knowledge with practical examples. Coaches from 2024-25 will share their material and help out with any queries.
Time varies based on events and existing knowledge.
Where do I register my kids for SO?
We are very excited to offer Science Olympiad(SO) Division A to our current 3rd and 4th for SO season 2025-2026. Science topics include earth science, biology, chemistry, physics, and engineering.
There will be a fee of about $150 per student to cover tournament registration, study material, event supplies, t-shirts, operational costs.
25% waiver for children of event coaches.
